Qualcomm just dropped some major news from its big event in Hawaii. They didn’t just announce one new flagship chip, but two. Alongside the super-powered Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, we’re also getting the standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, and the company has shared some solid first details about what to expect.
Qualcomm says the regular Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is all about giving phone makers more choices while still delivering top-shelf performance. It’s built on the same advanced 3nm process as the Elite model, which is a big deal for power and efficiency. At its heart is Qualcomm’s custom Oryon CPU, which is shaping up to be quite impressive.
For the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 specs, we’re looking at a setup with one main “prime” core clocked up to 3.8GHz. It’s supported by seven other performance cores that can reach a maximum speed of 3.32GHz. It’s an interesting approach, especially when you compare it to its bigger sibling.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 uses a different layout with two prime cores hitting a massive 4.6GHz and six performance cores running up to 3.62GHz. This clearly positions the standard Gen 5 as a powerful, but slightly more balanced, option.
Beyond the CPU, Qualcomm kept things a bit more mysterious for now. They confirmed the chip will have a “next-gen” Adreno GPU for graphics and a “powerful” NPU to handle all the on-device AI tasks. There’s also mention of a “superior AI-ISP powered camera,” hinting at some new photography tricks.
While we got a great first look, the full story isn’t here just yet. Qualcomm confirmed we can expect a complete reveal with all the missing pieces of information later this year. The wait shouldn’t be too long before we know everything about the next chip destined for many of 2026’s best phones.
