If you were hoping for a major camera update on next year’s Samsung phones, you might want to lower your expectations. It seems the company is following a familiar approach for its Galaxy S26 lineup, concentrating more on improvement than on drastic changes. Reports from Korea indicate that Samsung has already finalized the camera hardware for the 2026 flagship models, and significant changes are unlikely.
This strategy isn’t exactly new. For the last few generations, Samsung has preferred to make small, steady improvements rather than giant leaps in its camera sensors. It seems the Samsung Galaxy S26 camera system will continue that trend. According to the report, the rumored new lineup will feature an S26 Pro and an S26 Edge, with the Edge model stepping in to replace the old Plus version.
For the base S26 Pro, the hardware is expected to be a direct carryover from its predecessor. We’re talking about the same 50-megapixel main sensor, a 10-megapixel telephoto lens with 3x zoom, and a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera. No surprises there, really. The S26 Edge is getting a little more attention, though. While it will keep the impressive 200-megapixel main camera, its ultrawide shooter is reportedly getting a bump to 50 megapixels. This is likely the same sensor used in this year’s S25 Ultra, which is a nice upgrade, even if it’s not brand-new tech.
Now for the big one, the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra camera specs appear to be almost identical to the S25 Ultra. This is probably the most disappointing part of the news, especially since many of us were hoping for an upgrade to that small 10MP sensor for the 3x telephoto camera. It does a decent job, but it feels a bit dated compared to the rest of the hardware.
Of course, this doesn’t mean the photos will look the same. Samsung is almost certainly going to put all its effort into software and artificial intelligence to squeeze every last drop of quality from the existing hardware. We’ll likely see smarter processing and new AI-powered features to improve image quality, but anyone looking for major Galaxy S26 camera upgrades on the hardware front might have to wait another year.
