Xiaomi 17 Debuts as First Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Phone with 7000mAh Battery

Xiaomi just pulled the wraps off its new flagship, the Xiaomi 17, and it’s already turning heads. This is the very first phone to feature the brand-new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, but that’s not the only big story here.

What really grabs your attention is the battery. Xiaomi somehow packed a massive 7,000mAh battery inside, using newer silicon-carbon technology that should give it incredible stamina. When you do need to plug in, its 100W wired charging gets you back in the game fast. It also supports speedy 50W wireless charging and can even share its power with other devices.

The display looks like a winner, too. It’s a 6.3-inch LTPO OLED screen that’s super bright and has a buttery smooth 1-120Hz refresh rate. Xiaomi has also trimmed the black borders around the display down to almost nothing, which gives it a really clean, all-screen look. For protection, it uses something called Dragon Crystal Glass, and the fingerprint scanner is neatly tucked under the screen.

On the back, you’ll find a triple camera system. There’s a 50MP main camera, a 50MP ultrawide for those big group shots, and a 50MP telephoto lens for zooming in without losing quality. They’ve even bumped the front-facing selfie camera to 50MP, which is a pretty nice upgrade. The phone itself feels solid, with a flat aluminum frame, and it’s properly sealed against water and dust with an IP68 rating.

Of course, that new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip is the heart of the device. Combined with a large cooling system and up to 16GB of RAM, the Xiaomi 17 should handle just about anything you throw at it. It comes with HyperOS 3 installed and is available in black, white, blue, and pink.
