vivo just rolled out something pretty wild in China. The new Y500 launched on September 1st, and honestly, this phone is packing some serious specs that’ll make you do a double-take.
Let’s talk about that battery first because wow. We’re looking at an 8,200mAh cell here, which vivo claims is the biggest they’ve ever stuffed into a phone. That’s not just marketing talk either – this thing uses silicon-carbon technology with an energy density of 847Wh/L. What does that mean for you? vivo says you’ll get over 18 hours of continuous use, and even in freezing temps at -20°C, you’re still looking at nearly 17 hours of video playback.
The charging situation is pretty sweet too. You get 90W wired charging with what vivo calls “24-level charging protection” to keep things safe when pumping all that power. No word yet on wireless charging, but honestly, with a battery this big, you might not need to charge very often anyway.
Now here’s where things get really interesting. This isn’t just another big battery phone – vivo went all out on durability. The Y500 comes with IP69 rating on top of the usual IP68 protection. That IP69 certification means this phone can handle pressurized water jets and temperatures up to 80°C. vivo even claims it passed a 1.5-meter underwater test for 24 straight hours. Pretty crazy stuff.
The build quality gets even more impressive when you look at the drop protection. vivo equipped this thing with something they call “360-degree drop cushioning design” with internal shock absorbers. They’re throwing around numbers like 47% better micro-drop resistance and 100% better compression resistance compared to the previous generation. The phone even scored SGS Gold Label certification for drop and impact resistance.
Performance-wise, you’re getting MediaTek’s Dimensity 7300 chip. This is a nice improvement over the Dimensity 6300 in the Y300. The processor runs at speeds of up to 2.5GHz and is available with either 8GB or 12GB of RAM. You can choose from 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB for storage options.
The display is a 6.77-inch AMOLED panel with Full HD+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. vivo also tossed in HDR10+ support and Diamond Shield glass protection to keep that screen safe. There’s an 8MP selfie camera tucked into a punch-hole cutout up front.
Camera setup on the back is pretty straightforward – you get a 50MP main shooter with f/1.8 aperture and a 2MP depth sensor. Nothing too fancy here, but the main camera should handle everyday photos just fine.
The whole package measures 163.1 x 75.9 x 8.23mm and weighs 213 grams. Considering that massive battery inside, keeping it under 8.3mm thick is actually pretty impressive.
The Y500 ships with OriginOS 5 based on Android 15. vivo also packed in some smart network features, including AI-powered network selection that supposedly predicts weak signal areas and switches connections automatically.
Color options include Glacier Blue, Dragon Crystal Purple, and Basalt Black. The pricing starts at CNY 1,399 ($196/€168) for the 8GB/128GB model, while the top-spec 12GB/512GB version costs CNY 1,999 ($280/€240). Open sales in China kick off on September 5th.
Right now, this launch is only for China. There is no official word yet on when or if the Y500 will reach other markets. However, since vivo’s Y-series phones are popular around the world, there is a good chance we will see it in other places eventually.
The vivo Y500 definitely stands out in the crowded mid-range space. That 8,200mAh battery alone makes it worth watching, and the military-grade durability features add serious value for anyone who’s tough on their phones. At under $200 for the base model, it’s positioned pretty aggressively too.
