Nothing Phone 1 Ends Major Updates, No Android 16 Support

The Nothing Phone 1 has reached its final major software update. Nothing officially confirmed that this phone will not get Android 16, which Google is releasing soon. Instead, the Phone (1) will keep getting security updates, but no more new Android versions.

This isn’t a surprise. When the Nothing Phone (1) launched in 2022 with Android 12, the company promised three years of major Android updates—and they delivered: the phone now runs Android 15. While you won’t see new features from future Android versions, you’ll still get important security patches to keep your device safe for a while longer.

How does this compare to other brands? Samsung and Google now lead the industry, offering up to seven years of updates on their latest flagships. OnePlus and Oppo give four years of major updates on their top models. Most mid-range Android phones, including those from Xiaomi, Motorola, and Realme, still offer two or three years of upgrades, which is similar to what Nothing promised for the Phone (1).

If you want a phone that keeps up with the latest Android features for longer, you might want to look at the upcoming Nothing Phone 3, expected to launch in July 2025 as the company’s first true flagship. Early leaks suggest it will have upgraded cameras, a bigger battery, and a higher price—around £800 in the UK. Compared to the Phone (1), the Phone (3) is expected to offer a faster processor, better cameras, and a longer update promise.

For those considering alternatives, the Phone (1) still stands out for its unique transparent design and clean software, but you might also want to compare it to phones like the OnePlus Nord 2T, Samsung Galaxy A-series, or even the upcoming Nothing Phone (3) for longer support and newer features.

Specs at a glance:

Model: Nothing Phone 1
Launched: July 2022
Launch OS: Android 12
Current OS: Android 15
Major OS Updates: 3 (Android 12, 13, 14, 15)
Future OS Updates: No Android 16, security updates only
Notable Features: Unique transparent design, Glyph lights, Snapdragon 778G+ chip, 120Hz OLED display, wireless charging

Final Thought:

The Nothing Phone (1) kept its promise with three major Android updates, but won’t get Android 16. If you want the latest Android features in the future, it’s time to think about your next upgrade. The upcoming Nothing Phone (3) and other new mid-range phones offer more years of updates and better specs, so compare your options before you buy.
