Huawei Unveils HarmonyOS PC to Rival Windows & macOS

Huawei is officially stepping into the desktop game. At its recent HarmonyOS ecosystem event, Huawei unveiled Huawei HarmonyOS PC, a fully developed operating system for both laptops and desktops. The event was led by Zhu Dongdong, who heads Huawei’s Tablet and PC division.

So, what’s the deal with this new OS?

HarmonyOS PC — What It’s Made Of

Huawei’s pushing three main pillars here: Base, Ecosystem, and Experience.

  • The Base includes the HarmonyOS kernel, the Ark Engine (that’s what powers the graphics and smooth UI), and StarShield, Huawei’s in-house security system.
  • The Ecosystem, which has more than 2,000 applications that are compatible with HarmonyOS and over 150 unique apps. Big names like WPS Office are part of the package.
  • And finally, the Experience pillar. HarmonyOS PC plays nicely with more than 1,000 external devices — from everyday stuff like monitors and keyboards (around 800 supported out of the box), to extras like printers and scanners (another 250+ covered).

A Touch of AI and a Lot of Smoothness

HarmonyOS PC leans heavily into AI-powered features to boost productivity and make things feel more intuitive. Visually, the OS runs on the Ark graphics engine, which handles multitasking like a champ — high frame rates, slick animations, the whole nine yards.

Huawei even dropped a sneak peek via its official Weibo video, and yep — the interface shows a dock at the bottom, much like macOS. It’s clean, simple, and very “Huawei.”

Mark Your Calendar: May 19

The official launch date is May 19, 2025, and it’s more than just a software release — it’s a strategic move. Huawei is working hard to reduce its dependence on Western platforms and build a fully connected ecosystem of its own. HarmonyOS is already running on phones, tablets, TVs, wearables… now, PCs are joining the party.

Why This Matters (Especially in China)

This isn’t just some experimental OS. HarmonyOS PC is designed to go head-to-head with Windows and macOS, with a strong focus on Huawei’s home market. With a growing app ecosystem and tight integration across its devices, the company’s betting users will prefer something that just works — right out of the box, across all their gear.

We’ll likely hear more about hardware partners and supported devices at the May launch, but even now, it’s clear: HarmonyOS PC is a major milestone in Huawei’s road to software independence.
