Want to try Android 16 before everyone else? You’re in luck if you own a Xiaomi 15 or Xiaomi 14T Pro. Google has opened up Android 16 Beta to a few non-Pixel phones — and Xiaomi made the cut.
Let’s break down exactly how you can install it, what phones it works on, and what to watch out for.
Supported Phones
Currently, only two Xiaomi devices can run the Android 16 Beta:
- Xiaomi 15 requires OS version 2.0.109.0.
- Xiaomi 14T Pro requires OS version 2.0.103.0.
To verify the current version of the operating system, navigate to Settings > About phone. You need to be on the required version above else you may need to wait or update first.
Before You Start – Important!
- Ensure you back up all your data, as this update will erase your phone.
- This is beta software, so you might see bugs, crashes, or battery drain.
- Only do this if you’re okay with some glitches.
Method 1: Easy Local Update (No PC Needed)
This is the simpler way — no computer or cables required.
Steps:
Back up your data. You tend to lose everything otherwise.
You can get your phone-specific Android 16 Beta ROM from Xiaomi’s official website.
Place the ROM file inside your phone’s storage memory.
Go to Settings > About phone.
Tap OS version label ten times to enter Developer Mode.
Return to the system icon and select the three-dot menu in the upper right corner.
Look for your ROM file, and select it. Open the “Select update package” dialog and browse to your ROM file selection.
Tap Confirm and let it install.
That’s it! Your device will reboot to install the new Android 16-based HyperOS 2.0 operating system.
Method 2: Fastboot Update (For Advanced Users)
If local update doesn’t work — or you prefer a clean install — use Fastboot.
You’ll need:
- A PC with Mi Flash Tool
- Fastboot ROM file for Android 16
- Bootloader unlocked on your phone
Steps:
Request bootloader unlock from Xiaomi and wait for approval.
Back up your data (fastboot wipes everything).
Download the Fastboot ROM from Xiaomi’s site.
Power off your phone.
To enter Fastboot mode, press and hold Volume Down + Power.
Connect to PC and launch the Mi Flash Tool, then follow Xiaomi’s instructions to flash the ROM.
What’s New in Android 16?
Some cool new features to look out for:
- Bluetooth LE Audio Sharing lets you share sound with many devices.
- Screen-off fingerprint unlock – unlock without waking the screen.
- Better multitasking – especially on foldables and big screens.
- Live activity updates – track food delivery, rides, and more.
- Pro video codec – produce higher-quality video while using less storage space.
- Extra Dim mode – makes screen easier on the eyes in the dark.
- Quick Wallet access – Users can access Google Wallet through a simple power button double-tap.
Is It Worth It?
If you’re into testing the newest features early — go for it. Just keep in mind:
- Beta = bugs.
- Battery life, camera, or apps might not work perfectly.
- Not meant for daily use (unless you’re okay with hiccups).
Other Brands in the Beta Too
- OnePlus 13 will also get Android 16 Beta 2 soon.
- Samsung is expected to join later this year with One UI 8 on the upcoming Galaxy Z7.
Final Thoughts
Trying Android 16 early on your Xiaomi device is exciting — just follow the steps carefully. And always back up your stuff. If you’d rather play it safe, wait for the stable version coming around June 2025.
